| Chad
Maclies was a person of great accomplishment. He was baptized at Missionary
Baptist Church at the age of five years old and later became a member
of St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church where he was an active member
of the choir, Sunday school, usher board and drill team. While in
high school he devoted many hours to tutoring SAT math to students
at his church and in the community. He taught basketball during the
summer at Kingwood High School and volunteered with the CASE program
at Goodman Elementary in Aldine Independent School District . As a
Kingwood basketball player, Chad was very successful. He led Coach
Huseman to his first district championship, and he was selected as
the team’s Most Valuable Player. In addition, Chad was selected
to the 21 5-A All District Team both in 2000 and 2001. He graduated
in 2001 from Kingwood High School . While living in Kingwood, he was
a Member of Jack and Jill of America Incorporated, Fellowship of Christian
Athletes, Top Teens of America and Spanish Club. Along with this,
he received many other awards such as Who's Who Among American High
School Students, Who's Who in Sports, and was a member of the National
Honor Society. Prior
to selecting Centenary College as his choice, Chad was recruited
by hundreds of schools; he contemplated attending Yale University
or Columbia University where he would have received academic scholarships.
His choice to attend Centenary to play basketball proved to be very
rewarding. While at Centenary, he was nourished spiritually, academically,
and emotionally. He developed his own degree plan and received a
degree in both mathematics and physics with a minor in computer
science. Chad was very successful on the basketball court too. He
received the 2005 Athletic Achievement Award and earned All-Louisiana
and Mid-Continent All-Conference honors. His basketball number was
retired in 2005 and will be permanently displayed in the Gold Dome
at Centenary. Chad was definitely a Centenary leader.
Charlie and Vickie Maclies, Chad’s parents, say that Chad
believed that we all have a purpose and that we should strive each
day to fulfill the purpose for which God has placed before us. May
Chad ’s beliefs live on to help others fulfill their life
purpose and better their communities.
