BOYS PLAYER OF THE YEAR
King of the court
The passion showed as Singletary carried Kingwood to brink
of another state title.
Mike Singletary couldn't hold
back the tears. Though many of those playing and watching the
Class 5A state championship game at the Frank Erwin Center
in Austin had accepted the result — a Duncanville victory — well
before the final buzzer sounded, the Kingwood senior forward
wouldn't allow himself to believe it was over. (more)

Singletary, Harris power Kingwood
Mustangs to make third straight trip to 5A final four
As time ticked off the clock, Mike Singletary made his way
toward the Kingwood student section. He cracked a smile, which
was seemingly the first one he displayed in the 32 minutes
of play. Then he waved his arms in the air and yelled to the
crowd "Yeah!"
As the crowd erupted, the Mustangs basked
in the glory of their 59-51 victory over Clear Lake in
the Region III-5A championship game Saturday at the Campbell
Center, clinching their third consecutive berth in the
5A state tournament. (more)

Kingwood denies Elkins
Mustangs keep Knights off boards, scoreboard
Toney McCray looked to the ceiling in wonder. Then the Elkins
senior wing looked blankly toward his bench and pumped his
fist in frustration after he was stripped of the ball on the
way to the basket with under three minutes to go.
It was that kind of night for Elkins as Kingwood, the second-ranked team
in the state, shut down the No. 5 Knights 48-35 in regional quarterfinal
play Tuesday at Phillips Field House.
The Mustangs (36-2) advance to the Class
5A Region III tournament, where they will face Madison
on Friday at the Campbell Center. (more)

Kingwood finally gets act together
Singletary nets 15 as Mustangs top Eisenhower
In addition to the Thanksgiving holiday, Kingwood coach Royce
Huseman chose to give his players a few extra days off.
Though signs of the break were evident early on, it wasn't long before the
Mustangs looked like an elite squad.
Kingwood opened up a double-digit lead
in the second quarter en route to a 65-46 win at Eisenhower
on Tuesday.(more)

Bob Knight lands a big one.
This has been a program-changing kind of week for the Texas
Tech Red Raiders. First, they landed a commitment from Plano
point guard John Roberson, who led his team to the 2006 Class
5A state championship.
And Sunday morning over breakfast with the
General in Lubbock, Kingwood swingman Mike Singletary committed
to the Red Raiders, a family member told me. (more) |
