Coach Huseman has created a legacy at KHS over the past 30 years by leading the Mustangs to 12 District titles, 8 Regional appearances, 3 Regional titles, 3 State playoff appearances and a State Championship in 2005. Kingwood Basketball Camp is an integral part of this winning tradition by focusing on skill development and fundamentals of the game. The motto of “Play Hard and Have Fun” is essential, as campers get both individualized coaching and team development. Kingwood Basketball Camp is the beginning of the future of KHS basketball.

The Kingwood Mustangs boys’ basketball season came to an end Tuesday evening at the Phillips Field House in Pasadena with a 41-15 loss to the Dawson Eagles in the regional quarterfinals.

The loss did not keep coach Royce Huseman from realizing all that the team accomplished this season. The Mustangs made it further in the playoffs than Kingwood has gone in five years and had a signature win over Atascocita late in the season.

“Whatever happened tonight isn’t going to skew my view of the season; we had a great season,” Huseman said.

Huseman said, because of the team’s lack of size, they did not have much of an inside presence. Consequently, the team relied on its shooting ability to win games.
“The type of team that we’ve had with the size that we’ve had, we didn’t have any kind of inside presence, so we had to overshoot a little bit to get to this point,” he said.

“When you have a team like we’ve got, you have to hit some shots to be good, and we didn’t tonight,” he said, giving credit to the Dawson defense for defending the rim and not giving up easy shots.

The Mustangs struggled shooting, but Ubong Nwoko and Chase Lovins each made a three-pointer.
Huseman had special praise for the three seniors on the team: Lovins, Matt Charles, and Brandon Burrell. He said they were the reason the team got where they did this year.

“They’re true blue Mustangs, and they’re always welcome in the locker room,” he said.
“These kids played their butts off all year long.”
