Coaches vs. Cancer Night:
Friday Feb. 1 - Kingwood vs. Port Authur Memorial
Raffle, Shooting Contests and other Prizes
The KHS coaches are active participants of a national campaign to raise awareness
about cancer research. Over the years, several members of the Kingwood Family have bravely fought cancer. Because of this we are supporting a local charity, Addi's Faith Foundation. Addi Faith Bender, of Kingwood, passed away on December 4, 2007 after an extended stay at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital. It is a goal of Addi's Faith Foundation to help fund pediatric brain tumor research, and also to provide financial assistance and housing to families in similar circumstances that may not have adequate insurance or have to travel long distances for treatment.
The Coaches vs. Cancer program was
created in 1993 by the American Cancer Society and the
National Association of Basketball Coaches
(NABC). The program raises awareness to the cancer problem
and in turn, reduces cancer risk through education programs
while raising funds for American Cancer Society research,
advocacy, education and patient services programs. Check
out the American Cancer Society website at www.cancer.org for
details.
Congratulations to Kingwood Mustangs for taking home the top spot in the Texas Division of Houston vs. The Nation. The Mustangs defeated Seven Lakes, Smiley, and Hastings in the Texas Division. In addition, Kingwood beat DeLaSalle, MN in a National game.
Kingwood Junior Varsity finishes first in two of their three Tournaments. The JV took home top spot in the Cy Fair ISD and the Spring ISD Tournament. The JV beat Elsik and Dekaney in the championship games. The JV team is 19-2 on the season.
Nothing But Nets:
 |
KHS Basketball teams up with Creekwood Middle School to promote the "Nothing But Nets" Campaign.
Nothing But Nets is a grassroots campaign to save lives by preventing malaria, a leading killer of children in Africa. While the UN Foundation has been working with the UN to fight malaria for years, it was a column that |
| Rick Reilly wrote about malaria in Sports Illustrated, challenging each of his readers to donate at least $10 for the purchase of an anti-malaria bed nets -- and the incredible response from thousands of Americans across the country -- that led to the creation the Nothing But Nets campaign.
The reaction to Reilly's 815 words made clear that thousands of people were ready to help the million children dying unnecessarily each year of malaria. Within a few short months, Nothing But Nets raised over 1 million dollars. And so Nothing But Nets was born. |
